Senator Ted Stevens, Head of Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee
Closed Published June 30th, 2006 on mahalie.comUm, the net neutrality bill isn’t getting anywhere. Please appeal to your reps. If you live in Alaska you are represented by an inarticulate jackass who’s currently kissing the telcom’s nether regions (which will screw you out of equitalbe internet access.)
The Commerce Committee voted on net neutrality Wednesday and it failed on an […]

Nationally noted political blogger, Peter Daou, who writes the Daou Report for Salon, announced that he would begin doing political consulting for Hilary Clinton’s upcoming presidential campaign. One of his alleged goals will be to try to undo some of the damage done to her reputation by the savage attacks emanating […]
Destination: Camp Muir, Mt. Rainier, elevation 10,188
Closed Published June 30th, 2006 on Rambling with BluedogThe
first part of the holiday weekend will include Mt. Rainier.
The plan is to head to
Cougar Rock campground (which is the road to Paradise), set up camp, and
enjoy the remainder of the afternoon/evening on either Saturday or Sunday.
The next morning we’ll leave camp no later than 6:30, go to Paradise and
check-in with the Rangers office to see what the weather looks like further
up the mountain. Then head up to Camp Muir.
I have been up to Camp
Muir numerous times; its a great hike. Its roughly a 5000 elevation gain
and it should take us somewhere between 4-5 hours to reach Camp Muir. The trip
back down the hill is normally faster as we will have a chance to glissade
or butt-slide down various portions. Right now, we’re planning to take
our snowboards with us… with will definitely make the trip home faster.

Gaza and the Twilight War
Closed Published June 30th, 2006 on Tikun Olam-תקון עולם: Make the World a Better PlaceWe are in an eerie phase of Israel’s Gaza invasion. Operations have begun and Israeli forces have entered the territory. Some offensive operations have begun but mostly from the air or artillery. The major expected ground assault has not materialized. Palestinians are poised for the worst, but they know they’ve only […]
Reading Journal Entry: Counting Heads, by David Marusek
Closed Published June 29th, 2006 on Book of the DayDavid Marusek wrote the beginning of this nbook as a novella titled ‘We Were Out Of Our Minds With Joy’. Top 4 reasons the NBA Draft didn’t go as I hoped.
Adam Morrison to Charlotte. The Bobcats will never be on tv in Seattle. Check that, they will be on tv twice – once when they play in Seattle and once when Seattle plays out there.
Sonics Draft Sene. The Sonics might as well have thrown in […]
An interesting contrast.
The NW Current is reporting that, even with rising prices for fossil fuels, biomass electricity projects–using, say, wood waste or sewage solids–are having trouble penciling out. Between capital and fuel costs, it’s still cheaper to generate electricity from fossil fuels than from biomass.
Meanwhile, energy-efficiency programs are wildly successful, oversubscribed — and in Oregon, cost about 1.3 cents per kilowatt hour saved, which is a massive bargain. Says Energy Trust’s executive director, Margie Harris:
“Energy efficiency is the most cost-effective resource — half the cost of new generation…There’s more to be acquired if it were the wish of the Oregon Legislature for us to go after it.”
True ’nuff.
Will Israel’s Gaza Invasion Be the New Lebanon?
Closed Published June 29th, 2006 on Tikun Olam-תקון עולם: Make the World a Better PlaceRight off the bat, let me say that I’m not about the argue that Israel’s invasion of Gaza is precisely like its 1982 invasion of Lebanon (known then as Operation Peace for Galilee). But there are important and interesting similarities. Today’s Haaretz already notes that Ariel Sharon used the attempted assassination of Shlomo […]
I don’t use Flickr a lot and every single message I’ve ever received through it has been something along the lines of: “Person-You-Sort-Of-Know has added you as a contact!” This morning, however, I received this message from susan1975 inquiring about a photo I (or Scrivs) took of Valleywag Chief Snarkology Officer Nick Douglas at SXSW: “Hi there. Could you please add your photo called “CIMG0170.jpg” to my Male Butt-Crack Group? Thanks, Susan.”…
