Online once more - yippee!

Friday night I received great news via a text message.  It read…

Finally, after nearly two weeks, my network was online and "calling home" to let me know that it was ok.

A wave of relief hit me.  All was good once more.

In a matter of a couple of minutes, I jumped online, updated the DNS information, and was able to visit my site once more.

This outage was the longest in my server’s history.  How did it happen?

Well, the first part has everything to do with the fact that I haven’t been at home in Seattle since I quit working at Microsoft.  The very same afternoon of my last working day, I caught a flight down to LA and I’ve been traveling ever since.  Anytime I leave town, I run the risk of not being able to perform any maintenance until I return…

Speaking of maintenance, I should have asked my building manager to replace a bad outlet a long time ago.  Well, procrastination has a habit of catching up to you.  The first outage was a direct result of the known bad outlet finally kicking the bucket.  It took about a day for me to figure out that my outlet was kaput… then another day and half for the work order to be completed.

With the new outlet in place… I received a text message from the server.  All was well for roughly 6 hours. Then the windstorm that hit the Puget Sound knocked my system offline again.

At first I did not realize the broad impact of the storm.  In speaking with my building manager, I got the impression that everything was ok and that storm was not that big of a deal.

She mentioned that the lights had flickered on and off, then went out for roughly 4 hours but everything was back to normal. Unfortunately, that was not the case.  Without being able to physically touch the servers sitting at home, it was impossible to tell what happened to them.  Did they fail to come on after the power failure?  Did the power supplies fail due to the flickering?  Was there something else wrong with them?

Basically, I was left with very little remote management capability.  All I could ask my building manager was "flip the master switch off, turn it back on, verify the power indicators are lit".

Back to the storm damage…  Overall, the area was widely affected by downed trees, power lines, etc.  The storm had a huge impact throughout the region.

My good friends Marie, Scott and Richard all experience power outages lasting 7 days.  Another friend of mine, David, mentioned that he saw a young couple and their baby move into Microsoft’s building 36 for a few days to secure heat and bathroom facilities.  After hearing all the stories of the damage, clean up and general power outages, I can’t complain about my servers or my internet connection being offline.

It’s good to be back online… and I’m really happy my friends have power at their homes.  :)

I admit it. I’ve always discounted Red Hat a little bit– like the kid down the street you have fixed in your mind as perpetually 10 years old. Until he looks you in the eye and says ‘Hello’ in a baritone.

Such is the state of affairs with their last earnings report.

The Oracle announcement was supposed to do this. The Microsoft/Novell pact was supposed to do that. All Red Hat did was execute, execute and execute.

What immediately came to mind is Red Hat actually might turn into a major player in any brewing OS war/evolution. There’s been a bevy of speculation over at ReadWriteWeb about Google producing some sort of GoogleOS.

I do not agree Google would want to wade into the OS game, but perhaps they would consider throwing their weight behind Red Hat. Google’s weight is considerable. If Red Hat, as they have just shown, has the momentum… who knows.

I wonder if I should amend my predictions.

New Release Posted

We just posted a nice update to our TeamDirection Project 2007– just in time for Christmas (I think it’ll make a *great* stocking stuffer :) .

We fixed over 40 bugs of varying severity, and included a couple feature requests. Bugzilla is our bug tracker of choice, and here’s the delta:

Christmas Card from San Pancho

Tim was hired by Santa this year, but after completing his Helper Elf Qualification Exam he took off with Santa’s booty and went on vacation again. I was hoping for Christian Louboutin shoes this year, but all I got was this crappy postcard. Happy Holidays anyway!!

Shane Morris over at Microsoft had a post about a possible designer shortage if Rich Internet Applications take off in 2007 even more than they have already (he linked to my 2007 predictions on ZDNet). I’ve talked about this with a lot of people and a good number of them disagree that the Developer/Designer workflow […]

What’s In Al Gore’s Bookmarks Bar?

I have this really peculiar habit of always examining what is in the Bookmarks Bar of people’s browsers. I do it when I’m looking at someone’s computer screen, when someone sends me a screenshot which includes their browser, and even on TV when I see a browser somewhere in the frame. You can tell a lot about someone by what they’ve decided to drag in there.

So tonight, I was watching Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” on DVD and about halfway through the movie, they cut to a scene of Gore typing on his Powerbook. For a split second they showed his web browser and I hit pause and snapped this picture:…

Twitter As A Productivity Tool?

I know what you’re thinking. You just read the title of this post and you think I’m crazy. Maybe, I am, but here me out.
