I’ve always loved the subtle way that the Aviary products keep with the bird theme (the EGG file format, the cool product names) and they did an absolutely great job with Dodo, their web-based time machine application. With Dodo, you can take a picture and then apply time to it to see how it might […]

A New WordPress Plugin: Clean Notifications

HTML email gets a deservedly bad name mostly because it’s used to send out spam and marketing and also because it’s tough to work with from a design and code standpoint.
However, under controlled conditions and in limited circumstances, HTML mail can be a whole lot cleaner than plain text email. In converting Mike Industries […]

Chumby, one of the first and best use cases for Flash Lite 3 has raised another $12.5 million dollars in a Series B round. Chumby is one of the coolest uses of Flash that I’ve seen. Flash Lite developers can create their own widgets and deploy them on the Chumby website. It includes a touch […]

At the on AIR event here in Madrid just hours after the AIR Linux alpha hit Adobe Labs, Enrique demoed it to the crowd. He had Ubuntu set up as a VM and dragged an AIR file (Twhirl) from his OS X desktop onto the Ubuntu image and installed it. Same code, same AIR file, […]

Goodbye Movable Type, Hello WordPress

A few months ago, I silently moved Mike Industries from the aging Movable Type platform to the quicker-developing WordPress platform. I didn’t even plan to change platforms, but after more than a week of trying unsuccessfully to move from Movable Type 3.0 to Movable Type 4.0, this blog was in such a state of disarray […]

off

This is part of an ongoing series called Blinders where I explore some of the ways I streamline my computer workflows to minimize distractions.
I have a good chunk of writing to do in the next week. Friday, I was hoping to get a good head start. It was a catastrophe.
This afternoon, I took drastic measures. […]

The Undercoat War

It’s been a long time since I’ve lived with a dog in the house… and ever since Ksenia moved in and brought along little Asta, I’ve been wisely reminded of the work required to keep a shedding dog’s hair in check.

Asta, who has lived her entire life in sunny LA, has always had a beautiful, thin coat that probably had minimal changes to the undercoat.  After all, life in Redondo Beach was fairly easy and consistent.  Warm during the day, cool in the evenings.

Fast forward to her new life in Seattle… all of a sudden, Asta’s body is forced to deal with the concept of seasons.  As a result, she’s undoubtedly had the biggest undercoat of her life.

I could easily sworn a month ago, that Asta was about 20 pounds heavier than her normal self.  Her undercoat was bulging and making her look much bigger than her "summer petite" look.

The downside to being a warm dog?  For the dog… nothing.  For the dog owner… well, she starts dropping hair everywhere.  The stuff just floats up, gets into your nose, builds in corners, and just makes things look messy.

It’s a full scale war now.

I’m resolved to fighting the battle with all the tools available.  :)

That means vacuuming and the addition a really great brush specifically designed for the shedding problem.  We just bought a Furminator and after 1 use, there is no doubt that we will now gain an upper hand in the ongoing battle….  it came recommended by 2 friends… and now I’m passing on the recommendation.  The best price I could was on Amazon

Here’s to fewer dust bunnies!

leap at maczot

Yesterday, I raved about Leap. This weekend, as hoped, Leap is half-price at MacZot.
The handful of video tours available from the makers of Leap offer a look at how useful Leap is. If you’ve ever spent more than three minutes looking for a file, then consider Leap.

spring cleaning the documents folder

This is part of an ongoing series called Blinders where I explore some of the ways I streamline my computer workflows to minimize distractions.
Spring seems to be reluctant to make it’s way to the Pacific Northwest this year. I decided to coax it along with a good spring cleaning in my documents folder.
Documents folders […]

We launched Photoshop Express tonight and the early reviews seem to be pretty positive with a couple of odd blemishes (the terms of service seems very odd). I’ve been playing around with it a bit tonight and I’m pretty impressed. I’ve seen it demoed a few times and really like the ability to roll over […]
